In this section you will read about how your ability to write engaging copy for your site can help move the site forward and please the user (to learn more about the 'user' click here and to learn more about how website copy can be a huge viral marketing tool click here)

Engaging copy

To keep the user engaged with your site the number one thing is the relevance of the copy. This is more vital that structure balance and layout. Relevance means the most for the users in general.

A site must contain what the users expect and the language on the site must therefore be relevant and easy to understand. Great copy does not mean tricky words and showing off what the copy writer knows. It means copy that answers the users entrance point question ('entrance point question' is a term that James Kinloch has created, meaning what questions a user needs answering upon entering a site) The internet provides a way in which a user can access creative content that answers their needs in a second. With this is mind a clear site structure is also vital for a site but, past that, a site must have great engaging copy.

Page views

Page views means how many pages have been viewed by a user from a single visit. A vital part here is that you must understand paths that users take when on your sites. If you want them to stay on the site longer and visit many pages then engaging copy is vital for this. It could be that you just need the users to read one sentence and then act on this. If this is the case then that one sentence must be engaging.

Know what the users want

You must know what the user wants before they enter your site. Be it a landing page on a certain subject you must make sure that within seconds the structure, culture and engaging copy are spot on. The best way to do this is to undertake a User Based Design Process (click here to find out more about this process), if practical. This could be just getting feedback from friends and family that fit the sites target group. Or, if you have the budget and time, take up a full User Based Design Process.
